Sleeping Otters

I was cleaning up my portfolio over the weekend and came across this sweet little illustration of sleeping otters in the moonlight that I thought I would share. It was for a self promo project I was working on, but I never wound up using it.

Katherine Dunn Magic

A while back a friend sent me a card with a painting of a whimsical shoe with a marshmallow on top. It was love at first sight. When I flipped the card over to see if it gave credit to the illustrator of this magical shoe, I discovered the wonderful world of Katherine Dunn. She just published a book, "Creative Illustration Workshop for Mixed Media Artists". I have admired her work for quite a while, purchased a couple of her pieces, and can now call her friend. I have so much respect for how Katherine approaches her work and her life on Apifera Farm. Her artwork comes from such an honest place and she has an extraordinary talent for telling her stories with pictures and with words.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this book.  Katherine lets you inside her world, a world filled with magic and inspiration - twinkling ornamental night skies, gardens of donkey ears, and lots and lots of four (and sometimes two) legged lovin'.  I can't think of a better guide to take you through the world of creating mixed media art - not only is this book inspirational and will get your creative neurons snapping, but it is thorough and informative about process and materials. It also is supportive and gentle - don't do paintings just to sell them, respect your process and be patient with yourself, and don't attach yourself to the outcome.

Books Books Books

I have been pretty busy working on a group of four books for toddlers - ages 1-4. Drawing loads of monkeys, giraffes, dogs, and penguins. I will be sure to show you more when the books are published. I feel as though I have been neglecting all else as these books have been so time consuming - but I have one more to go in the series and then I can get back to my other work. Can't wait!
